Gunung Suku 7-8 June 08

Originally we are planning for another leisure and ‘santai’ trip to Gunung Irau, but a day before the actually day, Boy prompted me about the news Gunung Irau had been closed for public for some ‘work’ which he himself not sure. Stunned and surprised, I immediately call my friend who working in forestry department in Cameron Highland to re-confirm about this, and to my surprised and also at the same time perhaps relieved, yes, it has been closed, approximately effectively a month ago for ‘nature restoration works’ in my word at least. Well, it might not work well with my plan, but I guess, it works well with the spirit of conservation as I think this is an overdue call from authorities to stop further destruction of Gunung Irau especially from some stubborn and stupid trekkers who in particular keep throwing rubbish along the trail and at the camp site of Irau. Since my first time I’ve been to Irau, back in 1996, until the last time in 2006 (of course plus more than 10 trips in betwee...

Mt Merapi West Sumatra-16-19 May 08

At one lazy morning, I keep asking to myself, where should I’m heading to for the coming long weekend ( 3 days consecutive break ) the Malaysia public holiday - Wesak day. So I’m contemplating either I should plan for another 4X4 excursion or some expedition to other mountains in Malaysia which I would say the choices of the mountains becoming limited, unless if I want to do some repeated climbing trip which something I always said I want to avoid, but at last still keep doing on and on......

For out of reason, suddenly Mt. Merapi in West Sumatera ( don’t be mistaken with Mt Merapi in Java ), come into my mind, due to various reasons, which some, it is a cheap choice, as the travel by Ferry from Malacca to Dumai is cheap and you don’t need to do advance booking to get a cheaper price like Air Asia, ( which I checked the cost almost triple when it comes traveling during public holidays ) and no other extra hidden cost, e.g. fuel surcharge or airport tax, baggage handling fees etc. T...

Rafting at Kem Cinta Kelimat Sungai Siput-April 08

KEM CINTA KELIMAT ???? KAT MANA TU ??? That was the first question popped out whenever I mentioned to my friends, even a hardcore outdoor person who I thought know every single acre in Malaysia if you talk about outdoor spots in Malaysia. Well, this was the latest outing I went during the last weekend organized by one travel magazine in Malaysia…. a relatively popular in its own niche named ‘Libur’. Incidentally, a good friend of mine, Su, which a reporter of Libur, invite me to join her trip, although I’m considered an outsider, neither I’m a member Kelab Pembaca Libur nor I’m a regular subscriber of Libur…but sometimes I read Libur depending on issues highlighted on that respective month which some may interest me….but looks I have to change my mind now !!.. So without much hesitates, I said YES ! as the main reason, I never been to Cinta kelimat Camp, and it always good to explore the new place, although I’m no new in that area, especially for almost every year so far especially f...

Sungai Sedim White Water Rafting-5 April 08

Last weekend I went to Sedim, the place which currently under facelift construction, which until I can’t recognized that was the place where I went 2 years ago when we went for Gunung Bintang expedition ( see photos at Gunung Bintang album ). The place currently is under construction, to widen the access road to waterfall area, which a truly sign of commercialization of this place, including a newly completed dormitory. As usual, when it comes to development of recreational area, I always have a mix feeling how the place either should be, or shouldn’t be developed. But the bottomline, in any development, you have to sacrifice at certain degree the environment , but the quandry is, on how to juggle between the benefits and losses in terms of the needs to sacrifice the environment as, this would really need to be involving discussing of various expert parties during the planning stage, as if you let the politician to decide on this critical decision, you totally can be rest assured the m...

Sarawak Eco-Challenge VMY GO GREEN 2008

This was my first time I joined VMY Go Green Eco Challenge race series although I heard about this previously but never thought I would join this until one day my old friend, Hazel call me asking a favor to be her team-mate for this event. As usual, I asked, how much it will cost, and astonishingly she said, FREE tambang, hotel etc..fully paid ! terkezut den.. It was fully sponsored as this is one of the event promoted by tourism board of Malaysia. So apa lagi… although I had to sacrifice my annual leave for 3 days, as the event was 5 days including the weekend, but I thought, why not, as it is one in a life time experience, especially when she told me it will held in Bau Sarawak, the place I never been before, especially at Long House Kampung Pueh, Long House at Kg Belimbing, Long House Annah Rais and various other places, which very seldom you can visit if you travel by your own. Not to mention various traditional events, cultural shows, etc, which I felt very lucky to be part of this...

My friend called me yesterday, asking whether I'm free or not for the ECO-CHALLENGE which to be held at Sarawak next week at Bau & Ana Rais Long House ( huhh I never been to this place before ) . So as usual the first thing I asked how much it will be the cost, ?? She said, FREE..fully sponsored, flight, accomodations etc..semua makan tanggung as this will part of tourism Malaysia Board activities...indeed kalau menang dapat hadiah lagi..ha..ha.. so satu team berapa orang..?? 2 lelaki..2 pompuan... so she offered to me nak cukupkan quota lelaki ...so I thought..why not...??? cuma again nak kena apply cuti ni....mak ai...habihla cuti aku......the format of this Eco-Challenge will be using the Explorace Format, which getting more popular now, which focusing both on fitness plus some games or tasks which need to be completed........ aku rasa sah aku kena joget iban kali ni... as one of the task....dah kat rumah panjang apa lagi...itu confirm...itu....so anybody boleh ajar aku joget iban.....

Gunung Tahan via Merapoh-Kuala Tahan 4th Feb 08

A few months back, Badut, my schoolmate when I was in MCKK asked me whether I would like to join for his trip ( weirdly he didn’t make it to this trip, pull-out at eleventh hours, citing his recently promotion as Bank Negara Manager as a main reason he can’t join…but konon nak amik ati dia derma RM200 for this xpdc..... ) to Gunung Tahan via Merapoh-Kuala Tahan route so called to become advisor knowing I’ve been to Gunung Tahan for bloody 9th times before. My last trip to Tahan was back in July last year in 2007 and I thought that was to be my last trip to Gunung Tahan as I swear that would be my last trip ( during trekking ) and no more after that. But for some reason, Gunung Tahan, is always unique in the sense you might be swearing like hell you won’t be coming back during the trekking, but a day after you back to home, you will quickly change your mind and it happened to me 9th times and finally I decidedly 10th would be the lucky number to be my last trip. ( I hope so. ) So this ...

Gunung Nuang 19-20 Jan 08

I just back from Gunung Nuang, which a mountain that I climbed before several time, but the post climbing pain is almost the same especially every Monday after an horrendous climb ..ha…ha…. Situated at the border of Selangor-Pahang, Mt Nuang is one of the most accessible mountains in Malaysia as location wise, it is not far from the city, and the climb if you don’t intent to camp on the summit, is a moderate climb. However, it could instantaneously come on opposite side, if you intend to camp on the summit as we did! There is no water source on the summit, where the last water point, if you’re climbing with full load, will easily takes you another 2 hours steep climb. During this climb, we are quite lucky, although there were few groups climbing Nuang, we were the only group who ridiculously decided to camp on the summit. Ha...ha... this is considered part of our training, to climb Mt Tahan, and for obviously reason, we had a pesta makanan up there as we purposely bring so much food to...

Gunung Bunga Buah on 12th January 08

We went to Gunung Bunga Buah ( 1430m) on the last weekend on Saturday 12th January, which considered my second climbing trips for the New Year 2008. I started the new year 2008 with a bang with merely 2 weeks into new year, we had climbed 2 mountains ! Gunung Bunga Buah, standing tall in Genting Highland, is unique 2 senses, first you spent first one hour trekking on tarmac which used to be an ex-quarry, while the second one, the access point to the trail is ever changing !. Why I said is ever changing ? 2 years ago I used to climb this mountain, by using access from the guard house, as we always need to have a sweet tongue ( normally I pass this job to ladies ), trying to ‘pujuk’ the Pak Guard to allowed us to enter this ex-quarry. But after that, realizing too much hassles to deal with all pretending 'sweat tongue' trekkers almost at all weekend, they ( the quarry management or care taker ) decided to lock the gate in order in an effort to prevent trekkers from trespassing the quar...

New Year 08 at Long Neck Hill Tribe Chiengmai

Mentioned about Chiengmai, there is a place you can’t afford to missed-out as this the one and only in the world…the evocative LONG NECK TRIBE. The tribe which an almost mythical Burmese-Thai tribal group is live between Burma-Thai border, which the women of the tribe, have worn ornamental brass rings for centuries. ( Kalau kat Malaysia dah lama kena curik and jual kat besi buruk nie…. Ha…ha…. as some idiots also curi grating longkang depan rumah aku…inikan solid brass ). It was told, the rings are snapped around the neck of the girls at beginning at the age of 5 and every year a few rings may be added up to the limit of 20. But some had it up to 28 they claimed. The Long Neck women wear the colorful garb of northern Thai tribes people, white dress topped with scarves and hats in vibrant hues of red, blue and green. A few young girls also wear the brass rings, but the tradition seems to be dying out. But some younger generation of certain family might still strongly uphold the traditio...

Gunung Datuk, 6th January 2008

We arranged this trip as a ‘warming-up’ trip prior to our Gunung Tahan trip to gauge how fit we are for the up-coming grueling 7 days Mt Tahan trip next month. The result is…..ha…ha… STILL FAR TO GO…. For most of us even for Gunung Datuk ( which about 1/100 of Tahan challenge ha…ha…. ) dah pancit…probably the age is fast catching-up or may be too heavy to carry our ‘spare tyre’. I always fascinated about Gunung Datuk as the rock summit offered some splendid 360 degrees view, and with some photogenic models, the trip photos are really nice even with a compact camera. This time, 8 of us went to this trip, ( supposed to be 11 or 12 ) but some of them unable to turn-up at eleventh hours. BTW, the trip, as per previous trips to Gunung Datuk… is always nice, especially during the photography

Trans Vietnam-Cambodia Backpacking- Nov 07

This year, for some reason for our annual backpacking trip, we decided to heed to Indochina which to be exact, to explore the truly Vietnam, trying to avoid as much as possible those overly commercialized places in Vietnam where the tourism industry now is fast catching up. We started in Hanoi, (of course flying with chippie flight AirAsia ) then, we continued by train to Na Trang ( about 25 hours journey ) opted for cheapest sleeper coach, which they called it 'hard sleeper' which truly means what they means 'hard' !. Being in the cheapest available bed, we were put scaterred around in various coaches, in upper most bed ( triple decker bed ) where the in the upper most bed is just enough to squeeze your body in, and you can't even sit on it, and don't imagined to stand of course ha...ha... so I don't know either our first angkasawan Syed Muzaffar endured the same fate or not while he was in Soyuz capsule... but ours could be worst I think..and the bottomline, that's the 'punishment' f...

I stayed at a backpacker hostel call Manor Hostel which located exactly in the heart of Hollywood, to be exact about 2 minutes walk from a famous 'Walk of Fame'. The place is not too bad, but you can't expect you have a lavish 5 star facilities as you had in 5 star hotel or at least when I was in Houston ( when the company fork-out the bill ha...ha..ha... ) so this place is more a modest accomodation, but absolutely far better than the place where I stayed when I was on India backpacking trip...ha...ha.. which almost like Reban Ayam .... or even worst !!!
